CHAPTER ELEVEN

WE FLOODED INTO THE tiny kitchen at my ‘abode’ about thirty minutes later. Anne giggled when I referred to my house as abode. During the journey, I explained it was my mother’s way of referencing the house.

Patrick made a logical observation when I stopped talking, “... if I look at the meaning of the word it’s any address at which you dwell more than temporarily,” he said, “but you don’t live there temporarily. She doesn’t...”

We walked into the house, and all stopped and all of us listened. I guessed we would hear it if someone was in the house.

“She didn’t come here,” I whispered. “I’m actually glad of it...”

Anne grabbed my hand and squeezed it encouragingly. “If she turns up, you can call the police,” she said. “The way she had acted earlier says to me you’re definitely better off without her in your life...”

“I guess you’re right,” I said. “Anyway, help yourselves to whatever is in the fridge or cupboards...”

Anne grinned, then walked immediately to the fridge, opened the door, stared inside it for a few moments, then glanced up and grinned even more broadly at me. “That’s a giant cake you got,” she said. “More than enough to feed all of us well...”

Rachel walked to the fridge as well, and she stared, too. “Yep...” she said. “Works for me...”

“Let’s take this to the conservatory, sis,” Anne said. “That way Patrick can talk alone with Sophie for a while...”

Rachel nodded, and had already walked away with four plates, four forks, and three bottles of fizzy drink from the fridge before I could say anything to her. Anne left us a moment later.

I glanced up sheepishly at Patrick, leaning against the door. He smiled at me. “Anne knows me too well...” he explained. “But don’t worry. I will not try to get you in bed if that was what you thought I was after... although... to be honest, you’re one of the prettiest people I’ve ever met. Even prettier than when I saw you that day. It was about that day I wanted to talk with you... Can we go into the living room?”

I nodded.
